Farmhouse decor is pretty trendy right now but you can find ways to really make your own. This can use vintage linens. Raid your basement for items that you might not be using; or that just aren’t your style. Here are a few creative uses and craft materials that you should have.
Rick rack is going to be a staple for nursery items. You could also use it around mats of photo frames. After all it’s huge in the digital scrapbooking world; why not bring it into the real scrapbook world?
Ruffles are a huge trend right now, and usually we just see them in solid colors of fabric on everything from aprons to throw pillows or curtains. For a kitschy look, mix in different floral prints as a way to revive vintage fabrics. Plus, then you can hide stained or faded areas of material.
Decorating Primitive
Stencils are another big staple on these accessories. Skip the cutesy tulip designs. Instead look for a lot of word stencils on butter dishes or wash basins.
However, when you go with really rustic decor you need to make up for it in the rest of your room. You can do this with a lot of bright white paint. You can mimic milk glass with less expensive thrift store finds. Any kind of pitcher is really going to be very evocative of this design style. You can display several of these on your windowsill.
Careful shopping at thrift stores allows you to save tons of money. However, if you want to take it from country or vintage into the farmhouse style then you need to really just try out paint. Skip the trendy mirror finishes which are too French inspired. Instead, you’ll want to look for bright reds or even pale pinks on iron plant stands and metal headboards. Usually iron looks will be too rustic with this design style. However, you could go for a distressed look with some of the original iron really showing through.
It’s also important to coordinate your knobs and drawer pulls with this style. Usually most traditional metals will just be too shiny. You might be able to find oil rubbed bronze or chrome versions. Spray paint also helps you to mimic this. However, this is one of the few styles that still uses primitive wood knobs. This can be left in a natural finish even if it’s on a painted piece. However, you can also paint and stain it to match.
Primitive Wreaths
These can be fun and easy craft projects. A great way to really try and find ways to coordinate this in with a budget would be to shop around autumn. You can get a lot of these items at after Thanksgiving sales. Skip your typical reds, oranges, and yellows. Instead pick up the grapevine wreaths that are so evocative of this design style. You can also go with scraps of fabrics, or cream berry wreaths in this look. You also might want to consider decorating with burlap. You can use a Styrofoam wreath base and then wrap it with burlap. Usually, fabric wreaths are outdated but not when you bring in one of this seasons trendiest fabrics.

In a lot of design magazines we’re seeing a slight departure from this design style. There might be a French kind of look with elaborate accent chairs. Another fabric choice that will be popular will be any faux linen or muslin. This is really imperative for a light and airy feeling that still has a slightly rustic texture to it.
