Farmhouse interiors are one of the biggest looks in interior design. However, you can still find ways to salvage a lot of what you already have in your room. You can even use this as an interesting theme for an apartment. This is important because you can make a statement with your furniture even if you can’t add in lots of architectural details. You might be surprised at how streamlined and sleek this has become.
You need at least one cheerful or whimsical item in these kinds of rooms. This could be colorful striped wallpaper on the back or bookshelves; or a red painted bench next to a traditional pine table. If you want to use floral fabrics bring in bright red or blue backgrounds.
It’s also important to have at least one pattern in the room that doesn’t match. Traditionally you wouldn’t see an entire living room set. Instead, you’d see lots of mismatched furniture and either vintage style rocking chairs. However, just different silhouettes in a bright white can really be very modern looking. However, it’s not going to work unless you have tons of traditional architectural details in your room. Otherwise it will seem more transitional.
Milk jugs are also a staple in this design. You could use vintage versions as garden stools or even end tables. Leave them in their natural finishes to really show off the true beauty of the pieces.
There are a few architectural details that you might want to invest in. Traditionally this would be wide plank wood floors. However, these can be quite expensive. Instead, you might want to just try this on your table. Stain oak tables in darker versions to make it more contemporary.
Milk glass collections are very popular in this design style, but it can be quite pricy. That means that you should really show it off. Try adding texture to the back of a bookshelf with beadboard wallpaper if you want to keep things looking neutral. However, you could also just paint the back of the shelf in a bright yellow or red so the white will really pop.
Any kind of weathered finish works well in this room, but there are plenty of new ways to do this. Molding and paneling are popular in these rooms but what are you supposed to do if you just have plain white walls? You could try out a faux finish, but it needs to be quite sophisticated and subtle. Otherwise it will end up looking Tuscan or country. Linen faux finishes can be done in different color palettes so that it will really mimic burlap.
You also might want to invest in real paneling. This should be quite worn and rustic; but you can paint it. We’ve been seeing this style a lot on focal walls behind beds in designer magazines. The key here though is to use it horizontally instead of with the traditional vertical style.
If you want to accent the architectural details that are already in your room then use paint. Farmhouse interiors are one of the few styles where we see a big departure from the typical white molding. Usually it will be pretty close to your wall paint color. However, any version of taupe or gray is perfectly acceptable. It’s also a way that you can make your fireplace mantle seem less traditional. It will really pop against the white walls that are so popular in this style.
As far as your furniture goes you want to go with upholstered pieces instead of rustic fabric. This could use elegant wingback chairs. Just make sure that it isn’t too shabby chic or French country depending on your fabric.
As far as rugs go there are several options that you can go with. Any stripe really works well. However, you might even be able to paint sisal in this kind of tone. Sure, you can find primitive versions with actual farmhouses on them, but these are usually cheap and cheesy. Braided rugs are coming back in style too. However, instead of patterns we’re really just seeing more of a monochromatic look.
