You don’t have to be a designer to create a decorating color scheme. A color scheme is your map to a cohesive room design. It dictates your flooring and material choices.
When you choose your colors there’s several different approaches you can take. The first approach is to just start. Pick a color, pick any color, it doesn’t matter. This can be a paint color or a piece of furniture and start your decorating color scheme from there. If you have a blue sofa and white walls pair the room with a toile ottoman, checked curtains and plates on the wall for a Country French look.
Then next approach to choosing interior decorating colors is to be inspired. This could be from a fabric, mosaic box, artwork or a rug that you’ll place inside the space. Pull the colors from you inspiration piece. Remember to find neutral colors so your room doesn’t become oversaturated.
Monochromatic color schemes might seem easy to put together at first but then the room looks boring or bland. The key is to use several shades of the same color. The easiest way to accomplish this is to take several colors from the same paint chip. Try golden colors in a kitchen. The lightest color will be cream which is perfect for cabinets. Keep the darkest color to a minimum like using a few pieces of mustard colored pottery. Include one wood tone for countertops or knobs.
A dark brown color is one of the hottest decorating choices. The saying “blondes have more fun” doesn’t apply to interiors. Brown is dramatic without being overwhelming. For a modern brown room eliminate wood tones by using painedt black furniture. Chocolate brown walls give the room style. Then you can accent with a brighter color because brown is still a neutral. Brown is technically a dark shade of orange so pair it with terra cotta for a modern, funky space. Everyone will think a designer made your decorating color scheme. Brown and blue can work in a baby’s room. Pair brown with teal for a sophisticated living space. A dark brown color adds a masculine touch to rosy pink in a girl’s nursery or put it with hot pink for an office space.
