Bedroom Color Schemes

A bedroom color scheme can be based around a piece of furniture or a lamp. Make gold finished furniture pieces more chic by bringing in gray accents. Antique painted furniture often has several layers of paint that has aged over time. You can create the same effect with glaze. In this case it can be tempting to match the walls and the furniture, but this makes your favorite pieces blend in and get lost in the room. Try a neutral white or sand wall color. Usually you would put color on the walls and have neutral wood furniture. Reverse this idea for an interesting bedroom color scheme.

The best bedroom colors create a mood. Red can be romantic but also overwhelming in small spaces. Try it on just one focal point of the room like a mysterious silk bed skirt, or a framed piece of artwork. Balance the room with modern prints in black and white, damask fabrics and a bright white wall color to really make the bedroom pop.

Bedroom color design can give a nod to eras gone by. While it’s not usually a good idea to copy the exact color palette you can freshen it up. Put orange with aqua or white instead of the 70′s avocado green. Update the room with crisp white linens, bamboo blinds and painted clean lined furniture so it doesn’t look like a hotel room from the past. Orange can also work in a Tuscan, cottage or traditional bedroom. Use the same tone of wall color as your accent color. This means that both of the colors will have the same depth even if they aren’t on the color chip. Terra cotta pops against mocha without being too glaring. Bring the orange in subtly, like using it on pillowcases but not on sheets or put orange orchids next to wood tones.

Almost anything goes with bedroom furniture colors. If you’re going with a wood grain look for dark espresso furniture for a modern room or aged wood for a cottage space. Wood tones now have more ash instead of the oak yellow of the 90′s. The wood should be brown instead of orange or brassy colors. Painted furniture is also all the rage. Paint is an easy way to replicate designer pieces on a budget. More ornate Tuscan pieces may have a hand painted stencil of a wreath or bouquet of flowers. These handpainted elements are usually sanded down, distressed or glazed over so they don’t look too bright or country.

Colors for the bedroom can fit in with an overall theme. An all white bedroom can go in many different design directions. A room with a white ceiling, ornate white chandelier, painted white wood floor and a white bed can transition into almost anything. Add blue bedding for a costal or beach touch or try black for a modern room. Chocolate brown and white have a contemporary touch or put it with sage, green or red for a shabby chic room.
