Dining Room Paint Colors

Dining room paint colors should be appetizing as well as welcoming. Bright orange paint may stimulate appetite but it can also hurt your guests’ eyes. Usually when guests come in the room and say “Wow, that’s some color” it is more of a shock to their system than an actual compliment.  Choose colors for a dining room that will make you want to spend hours in the room conversing with your friends and sharing a meal.

The dining room wall color can compliment your existing dining room set. Terra cottas and yellow work well with leather or wood chairs, and they have a welcoming feel. If your dining room is open to the rest of your house, use the same paint chip you did in the kitchen, just go down a color. The darker color will provide more atmosphere and mood to the space. Red is a more formal dining room color but can also go in a country direction.

You may have seen a black dining room on the cover of home decorating magazines or your favorite design shows. It’s a daring paint color, but it needs a lot of balance so the room doesn’t feel like a cave. Accessorize with a chandelier that has a lot of bulbs, and a lighter furniture set. A black accent wall may be enough color for one space. Pair it with metallic wallpaper to add sheen to the room. Make the rest of the finishes sparkling and high end so the room doesn’t feel bleak.

A contemporary dining room table is often made of metal or plexiglass so it’s completely devoid of color. This means that you’ll either need to go completely modern or add some interest to the room. Contemporary design focuses on neutral colors and allows light and space in the room. Try bright white walls. You may feel silly painting white over your existing white walls, but the look needs to be fresh and clean to really pull it off. For a more moody contemporary space try a chocolate brown or slate blue wall color.

Paint isn’t the only way to bring in color to the dining room. If yellow, orange and red aren’t your cup of tea warm up the room in other ways. Cherry dining room furniture has red tones, but still looks elegant and traditional. Gold is a warm metallic that can be used on mirrors, sconces, and light fixtures. You may even want to gold leaf a tray ceiling for sparkle and style.
