Paint for ceilings provides an opportunity to add interest to a room. The traditional color for a ceiling is white, but you can add style and texture without being an artist. Paint the ceiling for a cozy effect or to add a handmade touch to a nursery. Match it with other accent colors like lined curtains, oak wardrobes, and cream bedroom furniture.
Ceiling Paint Colors
The color of the ceiling can transform a room. Lighter ceilings feel higher, while darker ceilings make a room more intimate. Choose a flat ceiling paint to hide any flaws. Blue can be reminiscent of a sky while still being sophisticated. You may not know where the ceiling ends and the walls begin with vaulted ceilings or attic rooms. For a monochromatic look, paint the ceiling the same color as the walls. This means there aren’t any breaks of color in the room for a clean effect. You can also make a lighter color for the ceiling by mixing your wall color with white paint.
Faux Ceilings
You can paint a flat ceiling with a tray or vaulted effect. Use a chalk line to mark off three rectangles. Put tape over the lines. After you paint the ceiling and remove the tape, your original ceiling color will give a shadow or tray effect. Use three different shades of the same color in a light, medium and dark tone. Paint the outer rectangle the lightest color the middle rectangle the medium tone and the inner rectangle the darkest color.
Painting the ceiling to look like a sky adds a natural element that’s perfect for a nursery or small bathroom. Sponges and glazes create a realistic cloud effect. Paint bright yellow stars and a bold moon on a navy background for a whimsical nursery. You can create a more subtle sky with the sunset colors of pink and orange. Blend the colors together for an abstract take on a fresco.
Ceiling Murals
Murals add pattern and interest to a nursery or living area. Murals can be time consuming and you may not think you have the artistic skill for it. Paint a ceiling medallion around the light fixture to add subtle color. Medallions are often architectural elements but you can expensively paint a faux medallion. Tie a string with a pencil on the end to your chandelier. Trace a circle around the chandelier. Create a vine effect using acrylic paints and add colorful flowers. Stencils are an easier way to paint a ceiling medallion as long as the stencil curves easily.
